Have gotten a few questions about where St. John's goes from here for the 2022 recruiting class. Right now, they have three players: Jaquan Sanders, Kolby King and AJ Storr, all who are perimeter players. For now, I have been told St. John's plans to stand pat, at least for the early signing period. It has only one open scholarship for next year right now, although that can obviously change, and in this new world where transfers don't have to sit out, I expect the Johnnies to also be active with transfers in the spring. I wouldn't expect any new commits for '22 in the near future. |

The Big East schedule is out. St. John's will open with Seton Hall in Newark on Dec. 20. It will play four league games at the Garden: Georgetown (Jan. 16), Seton Hall (Jan. 22), Villanova (Feb. 8) and UConn (Feb. 13). The early part of the schedule is somewhat easy: at Hall, home for Butler and Marquette, at Georgetown and home for DePaul. Great chance for a fast start. |

Julian Champagnie told me he can begin non-contact practice Wednesday.
Dylan Addae-Wusu a bit behind him with his ankle injury.
Champagnie thinks this team can win the Big East and said Hofstra transfer Tareq Coburn is biggest surprise of the newcomers.
Mike Anderson declined comment on Steve DeMeo lawsuit.

Jaquan Sanders has decommitted to St. John's. He tells me the decision was based on needing to get away from New York and eliminate distractions. He comes from Far Rockaway, a dangerous neighborhood in Queens. He said it had nothing to do with St. John's. |

It was really hard. Decommitting wasn't really on my mind at first, but then a lot of things started happening. It was sitting down with my mom and having a serious conversation about it." |

Was a busy day. A few thoughts on stuff that didn't go in my stories and you won't find anywhere else.
1. Tareq Coburn is going to play a key role. Every time I talk to Mike Anderson he brings him up and offers praise.
2. Hearing a lot of positives about Rafael Pinzon. Been told he's been very good in practice and has given Posh Alexander some problems at times.
3. The experience of this team is something Anderson loves. He talked about not having to go easy on guys because they've been through it before, played for tough coaches and are desperate to win. Seemed like something players who left may have lacked. |
2021-10-19 15:48:36 |
917-997-xxxx |
A few more notes that didn't fit in the last message.
4. Stef Smith raved about Julian Champagnie -- but more about his character and humility than his basketball ability. With so many new players, it seems like Julian has gone out of his way to welcome them and make them feel comfortable. That's what a leader does.
5. I got a confident, but not a cocky, feel from Champagnie today. He didn't make any bold predictions, but he seems to know what this team has.
6. Sounds like Dylan Addae-Wusu is getting closer to practicing. He is running and sprinting. That's a good sign and progress. |

917-997-xxxx |
Hey guys. Quite the day yesterday. A few things that didn't make my story.
-- Jayson Williams was hilarious and took some shots at some in attendance and some not. The whopper was him recalling a signed Chris Mullin photo in Carnesecca's office that said, "Coach, imagine if I could run and jump." Williams said it should now read, "Coach, Imagine if I could run, jump and coach." Chris wasn't there, but his brother Terence was.
-- Was impressed that Metta World Peace (Ron Artest) flew in from LA for the event. He didn't even play for Carnesecca. Posh Alexander got Zendon Hamilton to introduce them and the talked for a bit. |
2021-10-24 14:27:55 |
917-997-xxxx |
Also, from last night:
-- There was so much pride in the room, not only for Carnesecca, but for the program. Carnesecca talked a lot about it. He obviously won't be around forever. Would be cool to see the team breakthrough to give him a few break moments.
-- Was telling that the entire team and coaching staff attended the event. Overheard a few conversations about how close this group is. |

2021-10-27 08:31:58 |
917-997-xxxx |
-- Anderson talked about the sense of urgency the transfers have. They really only have one or two years left, so they are trying to make the most of their time. Felt like something that may have been lacking with last year's team at times. Some guys were too comfortable. This isn't the first time I've heard this from players. Julian has mentioned the work ethic of the new guys.
--Dylan Addae-Wusu did practice in the time I was there, still doesn't seem all the way there with his ankle. Didn't seem to be going 100 percent, or really close to it. My guess is he could miss the first week or so of the season, but we got time. |
2021-10-27 08:34:18 |
917-997-xxxx |
A few thoughts from yesterday that didn't make it into my two paper stories:
-- Posh Alexander said he got to talk to Metta World Peace (Ron Artest) about what it takes to make the NBA. Peace emphasized the need to just work, and not think too far ahead. He told Posh he liked his game.
-- Only saw about an hour of practice, but really liked what I saw from Tareq Coburn (perimeter shooting), Esahia Nyiwe (rim protection) and Rafael Pinzon (versatility and length). Nyiwe really stood out to me with his length and ability to defend. Might be hard for Anderson not to play him in the back of the press. |

St. John's beats Baruch, 107-43. Julian Champagnie had 19 points and 13 rebounds. Joel Soriano had 17. Tareq Coburn and Aaron Wheeler each with 11. Up next is URI closed-door scrimmage on Sunday. A lot to like, but obviously against a vastly inferior opponent. |
2021-10-27 19:23:32 |
917-997-xxxx |
Sent my story in. Let's get to it. A few thoughts
-- Julian Champagnie looked like himself, a very good thing coming off wrist surgery. He seemed to handle the ball a lot more than I remember last year. I asked him about that, and he said he does feel more comfortable grabbing a rebound and pushing the ball.
-- It's Baruch. I don't want to get nuts here. But I was impressed by the skill I saw in Joel Soriano. He has a soft touch for a big guy and can score. Now, I want to see it against Big East players where he doesn't have a six-inch size advantage, but it did impress me. |
2021-10-27 19:25:45 |
917-997-xxxx |
-- I think Rafael Pinzon and O'Mar Stanley are going to contribute. Both looked the part on Wednesday. Defense may an issue for Pinzon in Big East play, but he can skill and feel that is difficult to teach. Stanley's motor stands out. He plays very hard. Both do. On one play, Pinzon atoned for a turnover by racing back to block a 3-point shot.
-- Dylan Addae-Wusu is itching to get back. At one point, he tried to move past Mike Anderson to go in the game, and he was in street clothes. He knows there will be a minutes battle and the sophomore doesn't want to fall too far behind. |
2021-10-27 19:28:20 |
917-997-xxxx |
Ok, last text.
-- Montez Mathis was very active defensively, notching five steals. He told me he loves this style after playing in Rutgers' plodding system. He's a big-time athlete and could excel going up and down.
-- I liked Posh Alexander's game a lot tonight. Didn't try to do too much, didn't force drives. Only scored 6 points, but had 10 assists. Was more than happy to distribute the ball. St. John's may not need him to score big this year.
-- Aaron Wheeler showed a few glimpses of his immense potential. He hit a long 3-pointer, he had blocks on consecutive possessions, he scored inside. Was surprised he came off the bench. |

Wanted to follow up on yesterday's scrimmage with URI. Did some digging and talked to some people. This was a good day for St. John's. It revealed a lot of things it has to work on. This could take time. There are nine new players. Clearly chemistry won't happen overnight. One major positive was Tareq Coburn. He's going to be a significant contributor. I also don't expect Stef Smith, Aaron Wheelre and Montez Mathis to shoot so poorly a lot. Eight days until the games count. |

Jaquan Sanders' mother, Lisa, tells me the decision on Seton Hall was meeting her son in the middle. He's not as close to home, but not too far away. Said it's bigger than basketball. She wants to make sure he graduates and is focused, and wasn't sure that would happen so close to home. |

My St. John's preview will be out later tonight at some point. Here is a snippet. An anonymous coach's take:
"If they can shoot the ball better than they did last year, I think that's the only question mark I have with them. Obviously, Posh is going to be better, Champagnie is going to be better. I like the big kid they added, Soriano. He's going to give them a presence, which they didn't have last year. ... Mathis fits their system really well because of how athletic he is, the way he defends. He gives them a little more physicality. The kid Smith can really shoot it. Coburn is good. I'd be starting him if I was them." |

It's 59-18 at the half. I don't think Mississippi Valley State is going to win many games this year. Everyone contributed for St. John's. Addae-Wusu's ankle looked fine. Champagnie and Coburn each with 10. Posh had 6 assists. |

What's up everyone. Fun day yesterday. Some thoughts and observations:
1. Take yesterday's game with several grains of salt. That was not a very good opponent. St. Peter's, which nearly won at VCU on Tuesday, will be a much more representative opponent.
2. There was a ton to like. The two things that stood out: Shotmaking and length. St. John's has not had it in a long tine. Tareq Coburn and Stef Smith clearly can really shoot it from deep. Joel Soriano has some skill to go with his 6-11 frame. Esahia Nyiwe could contribute.
3. Julian Champagnie and Posh Alexander looked so comfortable out there. It's their team. |

A few more points:
4. O'Mar Stanley is going to play. The freshman does so many things Mike Anderson loves. He rebounds, he defends and he never stops. He was very impressive.
5. The biggest surprise for me was Dylan Addae-Wusu. He was not supposed to play, but after some early rust, he looked like himself. A few hours after the game, he was getting up shots.
6. St. John's is expecting to receiver NLIs from recruits AJ Storr and Kolby King. |

What's up everyone, it's GameDay! Interesting game coming up in a few hours. St. Peter's is a much more representative opponent than Mississippi Valley State. Peacocks were picked second in the MAAC and nearly won at VCU the other day. They play small, so I think we could see less of Joel Soriano and more of Aaron Wheeler/O'Mar Stanley. May even see some small-ball lineups with four guards and Julian Champagnie up front. St. John's is a 13-point favorite. Good tuneup for Wednesday at Indiana. |

St. John's leads St. Peter's, 47-27, at the half. A ton to like. So much weapons. Defense was strong, especially the close-outs at the 3-point line. Coburn and Champagnie each had 11. Johnnies were 11-of-21 from deep. |

Some notes from post-game:
-Mike Anderson hinted that he would shrink his rotation on Wednesday somewhat. My guess is Pinzon and Nyiwe may not play.
--Julian Champagnie declined to compare this year's team to last year's team. Smart kid, doesn't want to hurt feelings. Said he spoke to both Greg Williams Jr. and Isaih Moore about their game yesterday.
-- Champagnie on Indiana: "We're super-ready."
-- St. Peter's coach Shaheen Holloway raved about St. John's. Believes they are significantly better than last year. |

Had some time to think about yesterday's impressive win and look ahead to Indiana. Here are some thoughts
-- I'm very interested to see how St. John's defends Indiana All-American Trayce Jackson-Davis. He's too quick for Joel Soriano and probably a bit strong for Aaron Wheeler and Julian Champagnie. Could mean a shot for freshman O'Mar Stanley. I expect Mike Anderson will rotate guys on him.
-- St. Peter's is not a bad team. They were picked second in the MAAC. St. John's just made them look like one for large stretches of this game. I'm really interested to see how SJU does against an even better opponent, in Indiana. |

A few more thoughts:
-- Tareq Coburn is by far the biggest surprise for me so far. I was familiar with him at Hofstra, but he's still much better than I expected. I've heard the coaching staff say the same thing. He's not just a knockdown shooter, but he can create off the dribble. His role is only going to expand.
-- There was a scout from the Hornets at yesterday's game to see Julian Champagnie, per a source. Would guess there would a few for him and Jackson-Davis on Wednesday.
-- Will be interested to see Mike Anderson's rotation Wednesday. I would think Rafael Pinzon may not be in it. Same is possible for Esahia Nyiwe. |

What's up everyone. Just spoke to Mike Anderson and Julian Champagnie about tomorrow's big game. A few notes:
-- Anderson said plan is to rotate a number of guys on Indiana All-American Trayce Jackson-Davis. Doesn't plan on it just being one guy.
-- Champagnie said Aaron Wheeler and Montez Mathis have briefed the team on what to expect at Assembly Hall, having played there already. Said he thinks it'll be the wildest atmosphere he's ever played in.
--Champagnie admitted this is not just another game. "It's a big game," he told me. "We're excited."
-- Team is flying out in a few minutes, after practicing at home this morning. |

What's up everyone. A few thoughts on last night in texts to follow.
-- Re-watched the last play a few times. Bizarre that intent was to have Rafael Pinzon, as well as he played, try to set up Julian Champagnie. His pass was low, and the play broke down from there.
-- The atmosphere at Assembly Hall was intense. It was incredibly loud and hostile. There is no doubt the slow start was partly due to the crowd. Posh Alexander and Dylan Addae-Wusu have never been in an environment like that. Nobody on this team experienced it last year due to COVID-19. Champagnie said they had trouble hearing each other. Same for the freshmen. |

-- I was beyond impressed by Stef Smith. He shook off a bad first half. He shook off the nasty chants from Indiana fans. He was St. John's second-best player. Really showed you what he's made of.
-- Whether or not you liked the call, the ejection of Montez Mathis played a role in the loss. He's going to be key to this team, especially defensively. They missed him down the stretch on the defensive end. |

-- A few positives. Julian Champagnie played like a top 15-20 player in the country. Rafael Pinzon was really impressive and showed he will contribute. This team picked itself off the mat. It held its own on the glass, an issue the last two years. No moral victories, but this will help them as the year goes on. |

-- I admittedly expected more out of Joel Soriano and Tareq Coburn. But we also need to remember this was their first high-major game here. The speed of the game will take time for them to adjust to. I asked Anderson why he went away from Coburn in the second half, and he said other guys were playing better.
-- I said it at the time the schedule was released, St. John's needed to do better in that department. This loss hurts more because SJU really only has one other resume opportunity in the non-conference, against Kansas. They couldn't have planned for Pittsburgh being bad, but they could've added another good game or two. |

Game Day! Ok, maybe hosting FDU isn't that exciting, or the next two games, against St. Francis Brooklyn and NUT, for that matter. But there are things to watch. Here are some thoughts:
-- I'm interested to see how this team responds from a rough loss, even against weak competition. Will there be a hangover? Will they be extra motivated? Will tell you something about makeup of this team.
-- I think you're going to see roles expand for the two freshmen, Rafael Pinzon and O'Mar Stanley. They were impressive against Indiana. They need more reps, though. |

One more point:
-- St. John's didn't press much in the first two games. They pressured Indiana a lot, and it often led to fastbreak opportunities for the Hoosiers. Montez Mathis' absence didn't help. Clearly, there is a lot work to do there. Would expect St. John's to use the next three games to refine the press. |

St. John's leads FDU 45-32 at the half. Started well, didn't finish great. Too many turnovers. Defense was soft. Champagnie was way off. Stef Smith and Montez Mathis each have nine to lead the way. |

St. John's beats FDU, 87-74. Not a lot to like from this one. Very sloppy play. Defense was lacking. Champagnie was way off. But they won and they won by double figures. Best that can be said. |

Julian Champagnie admits St. John's didn't play well today.
Mike Anderson said issue was not burying FDU when they had the chance. Felt defense was not consistent and team was a half-step slow. He liked O'Mar Stanley's effort. He also said Pinzon will see a doctor Monday. |

About 70 minutes to tip-off. Tareq Coburn will play and Posh Alexander will not. Stef Smith and Dylan Addae-Wusu will handle PG duties, I'm told. |

Well, that was not very good. St. John's trailed by as many as 13, allowed St. Francis to go 11-of-21 from 3, but trails by only 40-38 at the break. Perimeter defense was not good. Aaron Wheeler was by far best Johnnie. Brought energy and grit at both ends. Mathis has 10 and Champagnie eight. |

Right now, three best defenders, and it's not even close, are Aaron Wheeler, Montez Mathis and Posh Alexander. Without Alexander, Anderson needs to play Wheeler more. That's my opinion at least. |

Well, that was fun, huh? St. John's rallies for a 76-70 victory. Held St. Francis to six points over the final 10 minutes. Champagnie and Mathis both played very well. Different team last 10 minutes than first 30. I think you can be somewhat concerned, but they found a way, which is the most important thing. Post-game coming up. |

Mike Anderson clearly doesn't like the criticism of the schedule. Brought it up unprompted, then declined my follow-up on the schedule. He said defense was real bad over 30 minutes -- it was -- but he didn't believe it was a lack of effort. He felt team was just not executing and leaving guys open to help. Julian Champagnie again said the effort in first half was not good enough. Said they have to start better. Anderson said Posh Alexander didn't practice yesterday, and wouldn't speculate on a return date. I've been told he should be fine for Kansas. |

Ok, let's break down that near-disastrous loss. Will offer some thoughts and observations in the next few messages.
-- You can look at it both ways. Team has now played back-to-back underwhelming games against poor competition. But it has also found a way to win, and it played very well over the last 10 minutes in outscoring St. Francis, 21-6. There were positives in that finish.
-- I really liked how Julian Champagnie closed. He took charge. He was a leader on the floor, at one point bringing in Dylan Addae-Wusu to the team huddle. He scored, rebounded, blocks shots. They needed every bit of that. |

-- Surprise statistic: St. John's leader in plus/minus was Tareq Coburn at plus-15. He didn't score much, only five points on 2-of-7 shooting, but defended well and didn't force shots.
-- Talking to people around the program, the expectation is Posh Alexander and Rafael Pinzon won't be out long. I expect Alexander to play against Kansas, if not Saturday against NJIT, and Pinzon soon after that. These aren't major injuries.
-- I think it's time we bury the schedule talk. It is not changing this year. Next year's schedule will be better, with up to five high-major games. |

-- Dylan Addae-Wusu struggled at times as a primary ball-handler, committing five turnovers, and that's to be expected. He's not a point guard. I do think the fan base needs to ease up on some. He had ankle surgery at the end of September. He missed almost the entire preseason. He's clearly working himself back into basketball shape still. Give him time. |

-- I don't know what to make of Aaron Wheeler yet. He has shown positive flashes, but has also struggled in recent games. It's fair to be concerned, but there are good things he does. It's up to the coaching staff to maximize them. Wheeler should thrive in this system. He was the best player for St. John's in the first half on Tuesday, bringing energy and focus to the defensive end, but then couldn't get a rebound after starting the second half, and got buried. |
